Extracurricular Activities
One of the most gratifying events a physician may have the opportunity to
participate in is a medical mission trip.
Dr. Behmand was a member of the
medical mission trip to Cartagena, Colombia organized by Healing the Children and
New England plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert Gilman, in 2001.  For many of the young
patients, these medical missions are a once in a life-time opportunity to receive
surgical treatment for cleft lips and palates, burn injuries, hand deformities, and a
variety of other plastic surgical problems.
 Dr. Behmand travelled to the
Philippines in 2005 as a member of a San Francisco medical mission team to
operate on children with congenital and traumatic defects. "These surgical mission
trips are the most direct way in which I can give back and make a life-long
difference in a child's life" states
Dr. Behmand.  "My interactions with the
children and their families, along with their open appreciation for the slightest
improvement that the surgery brings to their daily lives, have been some of the
most gratifying moments of my surgical career."

Dr. Behmand has maintained a keen interest in the field of Archaeology after
completing his undergraduate degree in Anthropology.  He enjoys participating in
archaeological digs from time to time, as well as efforts to preserve sites of
archaeological importance.

As a member of the Victor Vaughn Medical History Society,
Dr. Behmand travels
annually with faculty and medical students from the University of Michigan to sites
of importance in medical history.   The trips are organized by Dr. Robert Bartlett,
Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan, and take place in the spring of
each year.  The goal of the Victor Vaughn Society is to provide an opportunity for
medical students to learn first-hand about the defining places, persons, events, and
inventions of the past several centuries which have shaped the medical field as we
know it today.  Recent Victor Vaughn trips have been to London ('98), Paris ('99),
Bologna/Venice ('00), Montreal ('01), Vienna ('02), Stockholm ('03), Madrid ('04),
and Boston ('05).

Finally,
Dr. Behmand enjoys oil painting on canvas, and remains active as a runner,
tennis player and downhill skier. He also was a member of the varsity track team
(sprint distances) and varsity football team (wide receiver)  during his
undergraduate years.
